Insights Unveiled: An Exclusive Interview with Steven Strogatz

Steven Strogatz – For an expert in math, Steven Strogatz has a lot to say. In his most well-known New York Times series, his highly-acclaimed books, his many appearances on RadioLab and his regular public talks, Strogatz is out there to spread his knowledge about the amazing world of math. And mathematical communities could not find a better representative.

Steven Strogatz is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of applied Mathematics of Cornell University. He was a student in Princeton, Cambridge, and Harvard and was a professor at MIT before transferring into Cornell at the age of 1994.

He is a highly regarded teacher and is among the most popular mathematicians. His honors include a Presidential Young Investigator award, the MIT’s most prestigious teacher award, a lifetime achievement award to promote the understanding mathematical concepts to the population, and membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He is the writer of several books that include Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos; Sync; The Calculus of Friendship as well as his most recent, The Joy of x that was awarded The Massachusetts Association’s Euler Book Prize.

In addition to the fact that he is a prolific mathematician writer, and science communicator Strogatz is also a great conversation partner. He recently took a break off from his busy schedule to discuss math, technology education and more together with Patrick Honner, a math teacher at Brooklyn Technical High School.

Patrick Honner Which mathematician do you consider yourself?

Steven Strogatz I’m a mathematician who applies the principles of applied mathematics. I am involved in dynamical equations, differential equations systems and net-work theory and I employ these concepts and others in a myriad of fields, including biology, physics and the social sciences.

Patrick Honner The last time you were teaching differential equations, and advanced analysis was at Cornell. What other subjects do you teach?

Steven Strogatz My teaching goes all from elementary to advanced levels of my curriculum. From classes for new students to advanced graduate courses.
